Libya, Colony of Italy


Libya is located in the northern part of Africa. Egypt, Algeria, and Tunisia borders this nation. Libya is dry and has deserts. It is a barren country and also has plateaus. Libya also borders the Mediterranean Sea which was useful to the Italians because it was easy to trade goods to different places.


Libya has many different types of crops that they grow. They grow wheat, barley, vegetables, peanuts, olives, soybeans, and dates. These different foods attracted different countries including Italy.

Natural Resources

Libya has many different types of resources including petroleum, natural gas, and gypsum. Italy wanted these resources for their industries.


Arabs is the official language of Libya but English and Italian are also spoken. The official religion in Libya is Islam. Women do not receive good education but only ten percent of women work in Libya. Men wear cotton shirts and pants covered by a cloak and women wear a full length robe. People in the city also wear westernized clothing too.

The Libyan flag was created in 1977. This is the only flag is the world that is only one color. Libyans picked this color for it shows their devotion to their religion, Islam. The National color of Libya is also green. So overall, even though this flag is only one color, it still has significance importance to the Libyan people.


Positive Effects of Italian Imperialism in Libya

  • Italian Rule improved sanitary conditions

  • They created Hospitals and schools

  • Lifespan of the people increased

  • Railroads,dams, and telephones/ telephone lines were created to strengthen the economy

Negative Effects of Italian Imperialism in Libya

  • The Libyan culture was being changed

  • The people were dying because of European diseases

  • The new boundaries were a problem in Africa. These boundaries forced groups to divide or rivals to join together.

Italy wanted control of Libya because of location and their resources. Libya is located on the edge of the Mediterranean Sea which would have given them a lot of different countries to trade with. Also the materials such as petroleum would've helped in the factories at this time. All of these things made Libya a place to control during this time.
